Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says injured receiver Pierre Garcon is a ''long shot'' to play against the New York Giants on Sunday. Garcon missed practice a second day in a row Thursday, getting treatment for the painful swelling on the bottom of a right toe that has kept him out of three of Washington's past five games. He'll skip practice Friday, too. Shanahan says Garcon has received injections in an effort to help the toe. Garcon probably won't play against the Giants, but Shanahan says: ''I'm not going to declare him out, because you never know for sure.'' Garcon only has eight catches for 153 yards this season. He signed a $42.5 million, five-year contract as a free agent this offseason.

Pierre Garcon is unsure when he’ll play again

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garcon is unsure when he’ll be able to return to the field. His foot injury is so painful that it’s difficult for him to run as fast as he’d like to.We learned this week that one of Garcon’s toes is inflamed which clearly isn’t making things any better. I doubt we’ll see him this weekend against the Giants.
LEADERSHIP IN WASHINGTON

RG3: 'I'm the leader of this team'

The Redskins rookie quarterback understands that he has to assume the role of team leader and doesn't appear to be backing down from the responsibility.

Robert Griffin III: When you've got a super car, you've got to unleash it

Washington Redskin fans are still coming off the high of quarterback Robert Griffin III's 76 yard touchdown run that clinched the 38-26 victory against the visiting Minnesota Vikings. Of course as per usual when RG3 takes off and runs there are a litany of critics who hate it, no matter what the outcome is. I, however, am not one of those people. I don't cringe any less for...

Redskins' 'One Man Gang' Alexander gets his due

Washington Redskins special teams maven Lorenzo Alexander is making a move to get more playing time on defense. The player nicknamed ''One Man Gang'' had 1 1/2 sacks and plucked a fumble out of the air deep in opposition territory in Redskins' 38-26 win over the Minnesota Vikings. The Redskins have been looking to fill the spot left vacant by the season-ending...

RG3 makes Redskins ground game among NFL's best

Robert Griffin III's look back at his 76-yard touchdown run was surprisingly analytical. ''I didn't realize how much I slowed down at the end, when was looking back at the guy,'' the Washington Redskins rookie quarterback said Wednesday. ''I was enjoying the moment. I usually don't do stuff like that. But I talked to a bunch of the players and...

Jason Pierre-Paul sends a warning to Robert Griffin III

New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul must feel pretty good about himself after he broke out of his funk and terrorized the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. He must also feel good about his chances of putting some heat on the Washington Redskins Robert Griffin III after watching teams such as the Atlanta Falcons lay multiple licks on him. Today he said that he has some advice...

Washington City Paper: Hail to the Pigskins

There may not be a more racist sports team name than the one of the Washington Redskins. One of the NFL’s longtime franchises adopted the racial descriptor for a name back in the team’s second season while still calling Boston home. I know, I am as shocked as you are when it comes to where [...]

Cofield, Boothe will be familiar foes

They entered the NFL together in the 2006 draft class and quickly became starters for their respective teams as rookies. Barry Cofield began laying the groundwork to establish himself as one of the NFL's top defensive tackles. Kevin Boothe got cut by Oakland the following year. As fate would have it, they would become teammates for four seasons with the New York Giants. Cofield...

Osi Umenyiora No Longer Referring to Robert Griffin III as 'Bob,' Now Calling Rookie Phenom 'Sir Robert'

Robert Griffin III has apparently earned the respect of Osi Umenyiora. The Giants defensive end didn't buy into the hype of the Redskins rookie quarterback prior to the season, and thus said he'd only refer to the Heisman Trophy winner as "Bob." However, as the two NFC East teams get ready to battle on Sunday, Umenyiora is giving Griffin some...

Alexander a special kind of player

Dos Equis has the Most Interesting Man in the World. The Washington Redskins can counter with Lorenzo Alexander. Like the outrageous situations involving that suave pitchman in beer commercials, Alexander's ability to forge a six-year NFL career is just as improbable. Alexander was once a 315-pound defensive tackle. He is now a 245-pound linebacker who is garnering Pro Bowl...
