The Carolina Panthers have fired general manager Marty Hurney following the team's 1-5 start this season.
Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in release Monday that it was an ''extremely difficult decision'' and that ''Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games.'' He said, ''Hnfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years.''
Carolina has not made the playoffs since 2008.
Hurney, the Panthers' GM since 2002, took responsibility for the team's failures in the release: ''I am responsible for everybody in coaching, the players, the scouts and everybody in football operations," he said in the release. "After six weeks, we are 1-5 coming off a 6-10 season.''

Cam Newton was extremely emotional in his postgame press conference after the Panthers' loss to the Cowboys. See what the quarterback had to say.
“The past couple of games have been the same script, by the same director,” Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton said following Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. “It’s kind of getting boring.”There are plenty of words I could think to describe the Panthers in recent weeks. Frustrating, nerve-racking or upsetting come to mind but “boring” is not one of them...
After today’s loss to the Cowboys, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton told the media that he’s going to bring in a suggestion box to help him figure out what’s wrong with his team.“I’m going to bring in a suggestion box. When the Panthers wrapped up their captivating 2011 season, highlighted by the standout play of rookie quarterback Cam Newton and a respectable 6-10 record, team general manager Marty Hurneys job looked secure.
But after a 1-5 start this season, Hurney is now out of a job. The Panthers made the move to relieve Hurney of his team duties Monday morning after 14 years with the team...
Cam Newton is going through some growing pains in his second year as an NFL quarterback.
Yes I know it seems like the struggles are in reverse, as he had plenty of success as a rookie, and now is finding things difficult.
Cameron like many other quarterbacks has a mentor, or someone he feels he can relate to.
During Newton pre-draft training, and possibly before, Newton struck...
Panthers coach Ron Rivera says the team has placed nine-year veteran cornerback Chris Gamble on injured reserve with a torn right labrum in his right shoulder.
The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that cornerback Chris Gamble will be placed on injured reserve. Gamble, who has recently dealt with a shoulder injury, aggravated it in practice last week before Sunday's loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Captain Munnerlyn is expected to start after losing his job to fifth-round draft pick Josh Norman in before the season.
CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Carolina Panthers continued their 2012 swoon with a 16-14 home loss to the equally desperate Dallas Cowboys on Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.
As a result, the Panthers dropped to 1-5 on the season and are nearly a virtual lock to miss the playoffs once again despite that being the team's stated mission in preseason camp.
The following are both teams...
After another game in which Cam Newton looked every bit like a second year quarterback who relies too much on his physical gifts, doesn’t have enough weapons and plays in a ****** system for a ****** coach, he decided that one of the ways to fix things would be to leave a suggestion box out for reporters and writers to add their thoughts on how to best solve the struggling Panthers’...
I’m selling! You buying?
Your Dallas Cowboys are 3 up and 3 down after six games in the 2012 NFL season. The Cowboys beat the Carolina Panthers on Sunday in a less-than-riveting game and by a hardly-impressive margin.
Final score: Cowboys, 19–14.
So, what does this mean about your team?
Well, it is hard to say.
It may mean that they are likely exactly what they appear to be:...
