Although he has yet to play a game in his new offense, Reggie Bush is confident it will be a force to be reckoned with (Credit: AP Photo). Although he has yet to play a down for the Detroit Lions, Reggie Bush has taken it upon himself to talk big since signing with the Lions on March 13th earlier this year.  Just last month Bush directly compared the Lions’ offense to that of the 2009 Super Bowl champion Saints team that he was a part of on NFL AM. While some considered this comparison  to be unjustified, the Lions had 408.8 yards per game last season which is five more yards per game than the 2009 Saints. Today, according to the Lions’ team website, Bush may have overstepped the line this time with a new statement: “Honestly, I believe there’s no excuse for us not to have the No. 1-ranked offense. We have all the right pieces and the necessary players here to be the top offense in the league. No excuse.” This may seem like a lofty goal, but the Lions have been working towards this for a while as they went from the seventeenth ranked offense in 2010 to the third-best last season.  Bush goes on to discuss how he believes that the team will be able to achieve this goal by building their chemistry: ““Chemistry is something that takes time. It doesn’t happen overnight. When I was in New Orleans, we won a Super Bowl, but it took us a couple years. Our first year we had success — we went to the NFC Championship game. Then the next two years we didn’t even make the playoffs. Then all of a sudden that fourth year we won a Super Bowl. It takes time. It seems like a lot of these guys, they’ve all been here for awhile, they’ve been here together, and it seems like their chemistry is really good.” Bush seems to somewhat contradict himself a little because, if chemistry takes time to develop…say four seasons and it is also required to get to the level of offense he is talking about reaching this season, then it seems unlikely that the Lions will be the best offense in the league this year.  However, with the strong arm of Matthew Stafford and dominant play of Calvin Johnson combining for one of the most dangerous passing duos in the league, perhaps a strong ground game from Bush is the last piece the Lions need to reach the top of the offense pedestal. Moreover, on the topic of the Super Bowl, Bush had some interesting insight: “In general conversation, guys ask how it feels to win a Super Bowl, stuff like that. Calvin asked me about winning a Super Bowl. That was pretty much it. I try not to bring it up too much because that’s in the past. This is a different team. Different team, different time. None of that is going to have any bearing on what we do. Only thing I can bring is my experience and hopefully my leadership and help the guys and help them by being a leader on this team.” Despite all the big-talk Bush has been throwing around this preseason, he appears quite level-headed regarding his Super Bowl win with the Saints only four seasons ago.  A statement such as this shows just how much Bush has grown up since first entering the league and is an excellent demonstration of the experience and leadership he discusses bringing to the Lions.
