The NFL’s free agency period opens in two weeks but we’re already hearing a lot of rumblings about who will end up where. One of the biggest names likely to be available once the free agent derby kicks off is Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush. And from the look of things, the Detroit Lions are going to make a serious push for the 27-year-old USC product. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press has reported that the Lions have “real interest” in Bush and he will be the team’s primary target at running back this offseason. With Jahvid Best’s future up in the air thanks to repeated concussion issues, the Lions likely feel that Bush would fit right into the team’s offense as a versatile threat. Bush came into his own over the past two seasons in Miami. During his time with the Dolphins, Bush rushed for 2,072 yards on 443 carries (4.67 yards per carry), with 12 touchdowns. He also caught 78 passes for 588 yards and three more scores. But with cheaper options already on the roster in Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas, the Dolphins are ready to move on from Bush. Bush would seem to be a great fit for the Lions because Detroit’s offense is heavily centered on the pass and he is capable of being a phenomenal receiver out of the backfield. As a rookie in 2006, Bush caught 88 passes with the Saints, and followed that up by grabbing 73 in 2007. The Lions will probably have to throw at least $5 million a year at Bush to make it happen, but to get a versatile playmaker at running back, that kind of money could be worth it in the long run. There is a ton of smoke around this rumor and we believe, in the end, it will happen.
