After a calculated move (Danny Woodhead signing) by new general manager Tom Telesco last offseason, and a career year by former first round pick Ryan Mathews, the running back position for the Chargers is the strongest it has been since LaDainian Tomlinson and Michael Turner donned the powder blue and gold. Mathews provides the punch while Woodhead is the elusive scat back the Bolts needed to give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares. With the top two running back spots set for 2014, the Chargers have a decision to make with impending free agent, Ronnie Brown. Brown is more than just the average third-string running back. I like to call guys like Brown a “Walmart” back: they have everything you want, but don’t do anything too fancy. Brown can pass block, catch the ball out of the backfield, get three yards and a cloud of dust, and even return some kicks. If Mathews or Woodhead were to go down, Brown could do a more than decent job replacing either. However, an aging back may not be a place the Chargers want to invest their money. It may be time for the Chargers to look for a specialist, say a blazing fast back like De’Anthony Thomas or a goal line back like Jeremy Hill. San Diego may look to the draft, but Tom Telesco has already proven he knows how to find a gem at the position through free agency. With that being said, here are the top 10 free agent running backs. Michael Sam’s agent thinks San Diego is the place to be.
