According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the San Francisco 49ers don’t plan on using the franchise tag on safety Dashon Goldson for a second straight offseason.
The 49ers do not plan to use the franchise tag, according to two league sources, which means Goldson, a Pro Bowl and All-Pro safety, will get to test his worth on the open market. You’ll recall that “Good Cop” Jim Harbaugh said that Goldson “deserved” a long-term contract. At the combine, “Bad Cop” Trent Baalke said, “You can’t pay everybody, and you certainly can’t pay everybody if you’re overpaying others.”
The 28 year-old Goldson recorded 69 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 3 interceptions in 2012. As good as he’s been over the past couple of years, it doesn’t look like the 49ers can afford to re-sign or tag Goldson.
