Pro Football Zone:
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Eagles head coach Andy Reid felt like cornerback Asante Samuel was declining and that he no longer fit in their defensive scheme.
“Reid thought he was in steep decline and that his style no longer suited the scheme,” wrote McLane. ”The latter may be true, but I think Samuel is still better than his replacement. DRC has exceptional physical skills. He’s a bit of a flake, but that can sometimes be a good thing.”
Even if Samuel is declining, I still believe he’s a better corner then Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie. But Reid is right, Samuel is more effective in a cover 2 scheme opposed to a man defense. The Eagles were forced to switch to a scheme that utilizes more man coverage this year because Nhamdi Asomugha was lost last year in zone coverage.
