EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen told reporters after Sunday's loss at Chicago that he never meant any harm to Bears guard Lance Louis on a vicious hit, but Louis is now out for the season as a result. Following an interception by cornerback Antoine Winfield early in the third quarter of Chicago's 28-10 win, Allen found Louis closing in on Winfield. Allen blocked an unsuspecting Louis hard, leaving his feet and burying his shoulder into Louis' shoulder and head and knocking Louis to the ground. The Bears announced Monday that Louis has been placed on injured reserve with a knee injury and that his season is over. The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that Louis suffered a torn ACL. Chicago coach Lovie Smith felt Allen's tactics on the block were a bit over the top. "Yes, I did," Smith said, according to the team's website. "Jared Allen plays the game a certain way. He's a good player in our league. But I think there are some plays when you look at them again you say, 'Hey, we could have done without that.' "I think our game could do without that play. We have an injured player right now based on it. I think you could have gotten a block a little bit differently. That's about all I should probably say about it. I'm sure the league will look at it and they'll give an opinion about what they think." Allen, who wasn't penalized for the hit, will likely be fined this week as the league tries to crack down on hits to the head and to protect defenseless players. Allen didn't speak with reporters on Monday but answered questions about the block Sunday following the game. "I thought it was a legal hit," Allen told reporters. "He's running to make a tackle, so I just went to block him. I never intentionally try to hurt anybody. I turned around, he was running to make a tackle and I threw myself into him to make a block. "My condolences to him and his family. I never ever try and intentionally hurt anybody. I'm just trying to make a block and spring our guy down the sideline." Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
