The Carolina Panthers appear to have found their new secondary coach – and it's someone familiar both with Charlotte and Panthers coach Ron Rivera.
San Diego Chargers defensive backs coach Steve Wilks has accepted the same position with the Panthers, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Saturday. A Panthers spokesman said he could not confirm the hire.
Wilks, who grew up in Charlotte, played at Appalachian State and for the Charlotte Rage in the Arena Football League in 1993. He worked with Rivera in Chicago and San Diego, where he had the title of assistant head coach on Norv Turner's staff.
San Diego ranked 13th among 32 teams in pass defense in 2011. Wilks replaces Ron Meeks, who was let go following three seasons with the Panthers.
