Now that Brett Favre has officially called it a career (keep your fingers crossed) and Tarvaris Jackson is most likely on his way out, the Minnesota Vikings hope to find a quarterback to build their franchise around. Apparently, there was one player the Vikes considering trading for–Denver Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton.
Charley Walters of TwinCities.com reports that one of his sources within the organization claimed the Vikings considered trading for Orton–whose name has been thrown around trade rumors over the last few months, but still remains the starter as of now in Denver. Here’s what Walters had to say about the situation Saturday night:
A little birdie says the Vikings considered trading for Denver quarterback Kyle Orton but have backed off. But it wasn’t because of any progress made by Joe Webb, who insiders say is nowhere close to being an effective starter.
As interesting as that statement is about Minnesota considering a trade for Orton, it’s the fact that members within the organization believe Webb is nowhere close to being ready to make an impact as a starter. Webb appeared in five games for the Vikings last season and led the team to an impressive win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, but it was obvious there was still plenty of work to be done. Considering Webb failed to throw even one touchdown last season, it comes as no surprise to see reports that Minnesota has concerns about whether or not he can be effective as a starter.
