The National Football League has been trying to make the game safer over the last few years. And one thing they reportedly considered was widening the length of the field, according to a report by the National Football Post.Recently, the NFL competition committee discussed the feasibility of creating a bigger field similar to the size of the playing field used by the Canadian Football League. The width of a CFL field is 195 feet while the NFL is just 160 feet wide. The desired result of widening the field would be to cut down on the number and severity of head injuries.“I’m not so sure we shouldn’t think about widening the field,” former competition committee member Bill Polian said. “It’s a radical idea, but I think it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game.”In theory, a wider field would help spread out players over more space, thus reducing violent hits during NFL games. Warren Moon, who played quarterback in both leagues throughout his Hall of Fame career, believes the wider field used by the CFL does help due to fewer head-to-head collisions."The lower impact hits I think cause more problems over a period of time because there are more of them,” he said. “A wide receiver doesn’t get the number of hits a linebacker or lineman gets on a day to day basis. Those hits accumulate over time and probably do more damage than a big hit a receiver might get a few times a season.”However, the potentially wider field does present the possibility of more high impact hits, says one NFL general manager. That's because defenders could built more speed and momentum before laying into an offensive player. It is also believed a wider field would lead to more scoring since offenses would now have more space to work with in their attempt to drive down the field. Furthermore, defenses would have more ground to defend.Via National Football Post
