If Sean McVay lands the Rams' head coaching job, reports indicate he'll bring in Wade Phillips as his defensive coordinator. Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

Current Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Sean McVay is in the midst of his second interview for the Los Angeles Rams’ vacant head coaching opening. All signs seem to point in the direction of McVay being hired to replace Jeff Fisher.

If hired, the 30-year-old McVay would be the youngest head coach in the history of the National Football League. So it would stand to reason that he might want to add some experience to his coaching staff.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that could potentially come in the form of current Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

Despite leading a dominating defensive effort for the Broncos over the past two seasons, Phillips’ contract expired with the team following the 2016 campaign. He’s now a free agent.

A report over the weekend suggested that the Oakland Raiders might be a landing spot for Phillips. However, they’ve decided to retain Ken Norton Jr. as defensive coordinator.

Adding Phillips to a hypothetical coaching staff in Los Angeles would make sense for McVay. An offensive-minded head coach, he will need experienced coaches to take control of the other side of the ball. With 35-plus years of NFL coaching experience, Phillips represents that to a T.
