Stanford University announced today that it will retire John Elway’s No. 7 jersey. Elway, who is one of the best collegiate and professional quarterbacks of all time, will be the third player to have their jersey retired by the school. During his four years at Stanford, Elway threw 77 touchdowns and still holds the Stanford record for the most touchdowns thrown in a single game, with six against Oregon State in 1980. Following his collegiate career, Elway went No. 1 in the 1983 NFL draft and won two championships with the Denver Broncos. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000 and the Professional Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Elway is currently the executive vice president of the Broncos. Here’s what Elway told Stanford Athletics:  “I am extremely humbled that Stanford has chosen to recognize me in this very special way,” Elway said. “It’s a tremendous honor to join Cardinal legends Ernie Nevers and Jim Plunkett with this distinction.” The ceremony will take place during halftime of the game against Oregon on November 7th.
