If you were to ask teams around the NFL for the rookie who most needs to prove himself, the answer you will most likely hear is that of Arizona Cardinals third-round selection Tyrann Mathieu. After all, he has not played in a college football game since the BCS National Championship Game in 2012. He missed all of last season due to expulsion from the football team after testing positive for marijuana. His struggles continued into the school year and eventually found himself in drug rehab. The Cardinals are giving him a another shot at playing football, and according to a report from Peter King, they aren’t planning to give him any guaranteed money with his rookie contract. Mathieu announced in post-draft interviews that he is willing to submit to weekly drug-testing, but him and his agent Patrick Lawlor are not planning to sign a deal without Mathieu receiving money in it that is guaranteed to him. “Ridiculous. Not gonna happen,” Lawlor told Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. “We had no contract discussion with them.” We don’t blame either party for taking the stance that they are.
