EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings were left with only two wide receivers accounting for 27 catches last season on their roster after Monday's trade of Percy Harvin to the Seattle Seahawks. Minnesota increased that number to three Tuesday. The Vikings re-signed receiver Jerome Simpson to a one-year contract hours before the start of free agency, according to multiple reports. Simpson, 27, had 26 catches for 274 yards last season in his first year in Minnesota. Terms of the deal have not been announced. "Thanks the upper power for giving me another opportunity to play this game with a great TEAM& Loyal Fans Blessed!!. SKOL keepthefaith," Simpson wrote on his Twitter page (@rome081) Tuesday afternoon. Simpson signed a similar one-year deal in free agency last year following a drug-related felony in his final season with the Cincinnati Bengals, who made a second-round pick in 2008. Simpson flashed early in camp, showing a good connection with quarterback Christian Ponder, and was expected to provide the deep threat the team had long sought to help the short passing game built around Harvin. As a result of his arrest, Simpson was suspended for the season's first three games. In his first game back, he had four catches for 50 yards and drew two important pass interference penalties. Then he suffered a mysterious back injury that caused problems with his leg. He lost his trademark explosiveness and was held without a catch in his second game and missed the next week. He was hindered by the injury much of the season but did recover late and had nine catches in the final three weeks as Minnesota made its push to the playoffs. Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
