The past week must have been a wild ride for Tim Tebow.
News last week suggested Kyle Orton would certainly be traded — probably to Miami — suggesting the Broncos had settled on Tebow as the quarterback of the future. But the Denver Post’s Mike Klis blogged today that Tebow isn’t getting any snaps with the first team offense and is sharing time with Brady Quinn with the second team.
What?
If the Broncos have no intention of trading Orton, then positioning him as the top quarterback on the depth chart makes sense. He has the most experience and is the most qualified quarterback on the roster to start week one.
But if reports in Miami are true that a trade for Orton isn’t dead, then this move is an absolute head scratcher. Practice this offseason has already been significantly shortened and if Tebow is expected to start, the Broncos need to get him as many snaps as possible with the first team offense. He needs to build a rhythm and establish himself as their leader — that can’t happen if he’s splitting time with Brady Quinn.
Speaking of which, don’t buy rumors Brady Quinn is beating out Tebow for the number two spot or is in close competition with him. Both players are hard workers and gym rats, but Tebow is a much bigger investment. It may not have been the current coaching staff’s investment, but they inherited it. Expect preseason to be a decisive factor in Tebow’s movement in the charts.
