To the surprise of no one, the Eagles placed the franchise tag on wide receiver DeSean Jackson. This was something that had been talked about for a long time, and although I thought they might wait until closer to the deadline, it was a move I was just about certain they’d have to make.

The front office will continue to work with Drew Rosenhaus to work out a long-term deal and I really believe that is what both sides want. It’ll be interesting to see what happens because the Eagles would prefer to retain Jackson, but they won’t be willing to go overboard with the contract.

Personally, I hope the two sides are able to work out a reasonable deal because you know exactly what you’re getting by keeping Jackson as an Eagle.

There has been plenty of argument this offseason about what to do with DeSean. Before last season, I never thought there would be a situation where I wouldn’t want to see Jackson playing for the Eagles. However, last season was ugly. It was ugly for the team, and especially for Jackson himself.

There were points last year where I started to truly believe the Eagles would be better off without him. Throughout this offseason, I’ve had mixed feelings, but I’ve decided I’d rather see him stay.

The reason is pretty simple: you know what you’re going to get with Jackson.

A lot of the reason that there was so much talk about Jackson has to do with the depth at the wide receiver position in free agency this year. There are a lot of talented players with a lot of different skill sets.

However, there are a lot of uncertainties. How will a guy fit into the Eagles offensive scheme? How long will it take him to mesh with Michael Vick? How well will he compliment Jeremy Maclin?

Look at the Steve Smith signing last year. This isn’t a perfect example because of a shortened offseason and that he was overcoming an injury. However, is there anyone out there who didn’t expect him to do more?

I didn’t expect Smith to be a 100 catch receiver for the Eagles or anything really close to that, but I must say my expectations were much higher than what he actually accomplished. Again, there are plenty of other things that factor into this, but at the end of the day, he failed to live up to expectations.

If the Eagles let Jackson walk and brought in one of the top free agents out there, I’d have my concerns. Could a guy like Vincent Jackson be great in the Eagles offense? Maybe. I think he’s an awesome receiver, but I think its hard to guarantee anything.

We know what we’re going to get in retaining DeSean Jackson. He has his positives and negatives just like anyone else, but we already know what they look like in the Eagles offense. There should be no surprises.
