According to the Washington Post, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, better known as RG3, is currently in a trademark dispute with another organization who is known as RG3 (Research Group 3).Research Group 3 is a company that makes motorcycle suspension parts and has been in existence long before Griffin garnered the RG3 nickname. In fact, the company was founded when Griffin was just eight years old in 1998.A couple of years ago, as Robert Griffin III transitioned from a promising college prospect into an established professional star, he took steps to protect his brand, filing paperwork with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the phrases “RGIII” and “RG3,” for use on “shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, pants, shorts, footwear, hats, caps, [and] athletic uniforms.”Earlier this year, the company filed an extension of time with the Trademark Office to oppose both of the quarterback’s filings. The company was granted 90 days; the extensions of time expire next week. Now, the two sides are negotiating an agreement in which both could coexist while using the RG3 name.“We don’t want to have any confusion in the marketplace, and we’re sure he doesn’t either,” said one of the lawyers representing Research Group 3 in the case. The legal standard of a case like this really comes down to whether consumers could realistically confuse the two brands with one another. Well, because one makes his money on the football field, and the other on the highway, I doubt consumers could ever get the two mixed up. Well, unless the talented Redskins quarterback started endorsing Harley Davidson motorcycles or something along those lines.Via NBC Sports
