Rome Odunze is working to strengthen his connection with Caleb Williams even more during Bears Minicamp
David Banks-USA TODAY Sports

Friday was the first day of the Chicago Bears rookie minicamp, which means it was the first opportunity to see the Bears' top two draft picks on the same field at the same time in Chicago.

Of course, as we all know, Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze have been working out together for weeks now, even leading up to the draft, but this is different.

Now that the first days of practice are upon us in Chicago, the two are beginning to truly start learning the offensive scheme and continue developing their connection on and off of the football field, which now becomes even more important.

"I think it's the time you put into it," Odunze said. "It takes time and reps to continue to build that connection with any quarterback and within the offense. Gaining that comfortability with one another, going through those reps and talking through things and trying to get feedback on what each other are thinking on each and every play, I think is pivotal too."

While building the chemistry on the field is important in terms of getting familiar with the route concepts, reads, and anticipations, the off the field work is just as important when it comes to getting a strong grasp of the new offense.

"As a wide receiver and as a quarterback, of course we can go out and build chemistry on timing, where he wants to throw the ball depending on my speed of route and different things that we can build that, but when it comes to the installation of the offense that's why we're here today," Odunze explained.

It's an incredible, but rare, relationship the two have already begun to have with each other than will only continue to blossom as they learn the offense together.

"It's hard to imagine a better situation honestly," Odunze said. "Just coming in with a rookie quarterback, it allows us to grow together and allows us to learn this offense together as well..."

"When he's studying, I'm there right next to him studying and getting his mindset on different routes and different concepts. Which is a great way for me to learn because I like to learn the big concept and then detail it up and understand what I need to do within any specific scheme or concept. To be alongside him, it's a blessing."

Odunze & Williams are looking to quickly absorb the team's culture

The second part, and hidden factor, the Bears top two draft picks will have to learn throughout the rest of the offseason comes through integrating into the locker room.

Under head coach Matt Eberflus, the Bears have built a strong and close knit locker room with a tremendous culture in place. That's something Odunze and Williams will soon have to absorb in order to amalgamate with the rest of the team.

"I think both [of us], coming in as rookies, are trying to do our best to get involved in the culture with this organization and be the best team as possible that we can be," Odunze explained. "I think [Williams] is doing that tremendously and I think I'm trying my best at it as well. It's something that takes time and takes energy from both parties to be able to get done but I think we're both trying our best for sure."

The majority of this of course will be learned during the other portions of the offseason program and into training camp once the rest of the veterans on the team return to Chicago for practice.

Odunze on working alongside DJ Moore & Keenan Allen

Speaking of which, for the time being, Odunze appears to be at the forefront of the team's practice at the position given his draft position until the remaining players on the roster arrive in the coming weeks.

Once that's the case, Odunze will begin further building his relationship with DJ Moore and Keenan Allen, the two veteran stars above him on the depth chart at the position. The three are set to form a dominant trio together with Moore already claiming that it will be a race to 1,000 receiving yards.

"I think [it'll be] a very competitive environment," Odunze explained. "I think, for me, the mindset I want in a wide receiver room is everybody thinks that they are wide receiver one. It's the mindset that I bring to a wide receiver room and it's a friendly competition at the end of the day."

Once those two and the rest of the veterans get back to Chicago and hit the practice field with the new players, we can really see what the offense will look like.

It'll also be an incredible learning experience for Odunze being on the same field as the two Pro Bowl caliber wide receivers to learn all the nuances of the position.

"They've been doing it for a long time," Odunze said. "So, I gotta ways to catch up here. But, I'm going to provide [the team with] a different skill set and a different versatility aspect to the offense and I hope that complements their play."

Odunze, Moore, and Allen building their connection with Williams will be a much watch experience during the remainder of the offseason and definitely by the time the season rolls around in September.
