Tony Romo may have received some support from Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, but NFL types seem to have nothing but scorn and ridicule for the beleaguered quarterback. Romo's three second-half interceptions allowed Detroit to turn a 24-point, third-quarter deficit into a 34-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. "It's so good," Redskins tight end Chris Cooley told WJFK-FM in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday. "It's amazing, amazing to watch him choke like that. I'm just saying: I'm up 24 points in the third, if I'm the head coach, I feel I could probably just take a knee the rest of the game, punt it away, and there's no way Detroit's going to drive on you that many times. The only way you're going to give up that many points is turnovers, right?" Romo's first two interceptions were returned for touchdowns. His third pick set up the winning score - a 2-yard pass from Matthew Stafford to Calvin Johnson - with 1:39 left. "It's hilarious to watch him throw pick-sixes, too, back-to-back," Cooley said. "I loved it." Dirk has his back Cooley's smack talk stood in sharp contrast to the backing Romo received a day earlier from the reigning NBA Finals MVP. "Dear tony romo," Nowitzki wrote. "Don't worry abt all the critics. I heard that same garbage for a long time. Keep working hard and keep improving." But in the wake of Romo's latest meltdown, such warm words are few and far between. In an interview with KESN-FM in Dallas, Cowboys great Drew Pearson chided Nowitzki for his comments to Romo. "Hey, Dirk, this is football. This ain't basketball," Pearson said, according to the Dallas Morning News. "This is a real game where a lot of emotions play a lot more heavily into what you're doing out there as a professional. What he should be telling Tony is, 'If you want to stop the criticism, quit making those kinds of mistakes and lead your team to a championship.' " Pearson isn't the only former Cowboys star down on Romo. "Sooner or later," Deion Sanders said on the NFL Network, "we've just got to quit guessing and assuming this guy is the guy to get you over the hump and say, 'You know what? This guy is always going to be great statistically, but he's not that guy that can take you to where you want to go.' And that's the Super Bowl." Jerry Jones said everything is fine between him and his franchise quarterback. A video from the Detroit game shows Jones grabbing Romo by the right shoulder as Romo walks along the sideline after throwing his third interception. Instead of stopping to listen, a dejected Romo pushes Jones' arm away. Many observers perceived Romo's actions as a sign he's got a beef with Jones. Others assumed it was simply a sign of frustration. Jones called the former belief "ridiculous." "All I was doing on the sideline was hollering at the offense - 'We're going to get it back, and when we get it back, let's win,' " Jones told KRLD-FM in Dallas. Other comments by Jones, including some that questioned Jason Garrett's play-calling, indicated he didn't solely blame Romo for the worst collapse in franchise history. "You probably do get more conservative (when enjoying a 24-point cushion)," Jones said. Too aggressive perhaps Each of Romo's interceptions came in down-and-distance situations that usually call for runs. "Again, if you really look hard at where we were in that third quarter, you can make a case that if you run the ball a few times and punt it, run the ball a few times and punt it, stats show you can't lose it," said Jones, who added he's talked to Garrett about playing it safer when the Cowboys enjoy a large lead. torsborn@express-news.net
