Florida International has hired former Illinois coach Ron Turner to take over its football program.
FIU director of sports and entertainment Pete Garcia says Turner signed a five-year contract Thursday night, with a base salary of $500,000 annually. A news conference with Turner was being scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Turner replaces Mario Cristobal, who was fired last month.
Turner most recently was the quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is a past offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and was Peyton Manning's position coach with the Indianapolis Colts.
Garcia says Turner is ''the best quarterbacks coach in America, college or pro. So I'm very excited to get this guy.''

For the 23rd time in his career, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has been named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week following Denver’s 38-3 win over Kansas City on Sunday.
Manning is now tied with New England’s Tom Brady for the most weekly offensive awards won all-time, with Miami’s retired legend Dan Marino (18) behind them...
WHO SHOULD WIN IT?
Aaron Rodgers has won NFL MVP during his career. He weighed in with his selection for this season's MVP, and it might surprise you.
Peyton Manning vs. Adrian Peterson: two historic seasons, one MVP. Scott Kacsmar puts voters to task with an in-depth review of the seasons and why MVP voting results (1986-2011) say you have to take the QB.
With the 2012 NFL regular season in the books, it’s time to hand out awards to the league’s top talent. This year, there are more players...
John Elway insisted that every one of the Denver Broncos was better the second Peyton Manning put his signature on that nearly $100 million contract last spring.
Indeed, all have prospered from the arrival of the meticulous quarterback whose work ethic generated, as coach John Fox also predicted, a lifting of all boats.
While Manning was turning what began as a season of mystery...
Most people carry around inanimate objects as good luck charms. Things like a lucky rabbit’s foot, four leaf clover, or even wear a pair of underwear that seems to add an extra bit of fortune to their life. One NFL team can now say they have themselves a lucky kick returner. Denver Bronco rookie … Continue reading »
Denver Broncos rookie running back Ronnie Hillman fumbled in the first quarter of Sunday's 38-3 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, which could have him in the Broncos dog house for the playoffs.
On the fumble, Hillman almost got tackle Orlando Franklin injured as his legs got tangled while trying to tackle Chiefs cornerback Brandon Flowers. He was out for one series but then...
I’d like to start this off by saying the argument that Matt Ryan can’t go deep into the playoffs because he’s never won a playoff game is ridiculous. Peyton Manning was once 0-3 in the playoffs and he went on to win a Super Bowl. Plus, two of Ryan’s playoff losses came against eventual Super Bowl Champs. Finally, it’s just 3 games. It doesn’t really mean much. However...
The AFC Playoff Picture
The stage is set and the teams are locked in. Just like the good ‘ol days, Brady & Manning are resting up for divisional round match-ups at home next week. Who the future Hall-of-Famers square off against will be more clear following the first AFC Wild Card match-up:
(6) Cincinnati Bengals @ (3) Houston Texans – 01/05 – 4:30 – NBC
As every NFL fan knows, the 2012-13 regular season is over. For fans of the 20 teams who missed the playoffs, they are in mourning I am sure. Of course, being a fan of the game, I miss it also.
The Eagles will interview Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy for their head coaching vacancy this weekend in Denver, according to a CBSsports.com report.
McCoy already has interviews scheduled with the Cardinals and Bills. He is permitted to interview for head coaching jobs this weekend only because the Broncos have the AFC's bye in the playoffs.
There are several awards already set in stone with regards to who will come out the winner. If it is not clear-cut, then there are two or three players to choose from. Comeback player of the year, offensive player of the year and league MVP will either go to Adrian Peterson or Peyton Manning. Peterson, came up nine yards shy of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record...
