J. Mike's Missives:
Technically, it’s called “watching tape.” Film is just so archaic, especially considering the gigabytes worth of game film quarterback Matt Ryan can digest on his laptop.
(Hence the start of this great read).
The whole game tape process is broken down in a recent article from CBSSports.com’s Pete Prisco (Private showing: Ryan’s road to QB stardom paved with tape).
Rarely do outsiders get a chance to see game film the way players do due to the whole competitive advantage/trade secret thing. But Ryan opens up a bit in this piece to explain why he watches film and what quarterbacks he studies:
Peyton Manning
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Matt Schaub
Philip Rivers
All led offenses ranked in the top 10 in passing yards in 2009.
“I try to look at that tape three or four days a week in the offseason,” Ryan tells Prisco. “Whether I have 25 minutes or I have two hours, I will watch. It just depends.”
