Found February 10, 2013 on NFL Trade Rumors:
Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that the Browns are not expected to pursue a trade for Patriots backup QB Ryan Mallett. Cabot adds that Michael Vick is unlikely to end up in Cleveland, should even be available. She also mentions that Alex Smith and Matt Flynn could be potential trade options for the Browns in the next few weeks. It’s expected that the Browns will look to reinforce the quarterback position this offseason by bringing in someone to compete with Brandon Weeden for the starting job. Mallet has been consistently mentioned as a potential option for the Browns since they hired Michael Lombardi as VP of Player Personnel. Since taking the job, there hasn’t been any real indication that he’s even being considered, so it’s safe to say that this idea is being fueled solely by speculation. New offensive coordinator Norv Turner has said that he would like to see what Weeden can do, but it would be surprising for the Browns to not bring in another quarterback to...

Expectations remain unchanged as Browns changes continue

I’m feeling surprisingly good about the Cleveland Browns right now. I know that sounds funny to say at this point in the year. I’ve been kind of down on them with all the unknown variables hanging in the air, but a week out of the loop 1 gave me a bit of perspective on the team and just what they’ve done so far this off-season. Let’s just say the word “rebuild” hasn’t...

Ryan Mallett to the Browns likely won’t happen

There have been some reports that the Cleveland Browns may look to trade for Patriots back up quarterback Ryan Mallett with the addition of Michael Lombardi to their front office. According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer, the Browns aren’t expected to go after Mallett. Even if Lombardi wants Mallett, (which we don’t know) the rest of the Browns front office would...

Browns have tons of cap space and are ready to spend

Former general manager Tom Heckert didn’t burn the building down so to speak. Heckert did a good job of not overspending and started building youth before he was let go. New GM Mike Lombardi will be working with approximately $40 to $48 million dollars, and can restock a roster that lacks top notch talent, but has solid building blocks.

Report: Browns want an upgrade over Brandon Weeden

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Cleveland Browns new regime really wants an upgrade over quarterback Brandon Weeden who was just drafted in the first round of last year’s draft. La Canfora mentions 49ers quarterback Alex Smith as an option for the Browns. Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'...

Report: Ryan Mallett Not Expected to Be Targeted by Browns in Trade

It appears that Ryan Mallett is going nowhere — for now. The Patriots’ third-year quarterback has been a rumored trade chip ever since he was drafted in the third round out of Arkansas in April 2011. When Mike Lombardi was hired by the Cleveland Browns, the AFC North squad became a likely landing spot for Mallett. The Browns are not expected to trade for Mallett, though, according...

New Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III said today he is leaving the team in good hands. Haslam III said he misses running his Pilot Flying J truck stop chain, he is returning to the company to resume his duties as the CEO. Haslam feels he has a great group of people in charge in Berea, he feels the team is in capable hands. The Cleveland Browns have a new head coach and new offensive...

Browns “Badly” Want To Upgrade From Brandon Weeden?

According to Jason La Canfora, the Cleveland Browns new front office “badly wants to upgrade from former first-round pick Brandon Weeden.“ La Canfora mentions that Alex Smith could be in play for the Browns. Michael Vick was also listed as a speculative option for Cleveland, but he restructured his deal to remain with the Eagles earlier this morning. The Browns new coaching...

NFL Rumor: Browns listed as prime candidate to steal Flacco from Ravens

The Cleveland Browns could conceivably roll into Year One of the Joe Banner experiment with Brandon Weeden at the helm. They could bring in a cagey veteran to give Weeden a bit of a challenge for the starting spot. They could also try to acquire a questionable cast-aside starter in San Francisco’s Alex Smith. Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, however, things the Browns could...

D’Qwell Jackson’s contract officially fully guaranteed for 2013

If you were wondering if Browns inside linebacker D’Qwell Jackson would survive the move from Dick Jauron’s 4-3 defense to Ray Horton’s 3-4 scheme, wonder no more.  Since Jackson – unlike 4-3 defensive end Frostee Rucker – remained on the roster past Wednesday, February 6th, his $3.6 million base salary is fully guaranteed for the upcoming season. If Joe Banner, Mike Lombardi...

According to Bernie Kosar, and his doctor who “wants you to know enough to know that he’s not a quack,” Bernie Kosar is doing just fine

If you’ve been paying any attention to the sports page lately, you might have noticed that legendary Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar’s disappearance from public view in the wake of his slow descent into toddlerhood on Twitter that culminated in a completely disassociative radio appearance in early December was not actually due to secret meetings with Mike Lombardi about a position...

How the Browns could win a Joe Flacco negotiation

The world of NFL contracts is pretty tough to comprehend at times due to the fact that there are various bonuses and cap implications. Baseball, conversely, is pretty easy. There are contracts with dollar amounts and options, and other than options, pretty much everything else is guaranteed. The structures (and re-structures) of NFL contracts will sometimes make your head spin....

While We’re Waiting… Sunday morning reading

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. I’d rather the Browns run back Weeden than go with someone like Alex Smith. “There is no question that there is a pretty sizable gap between the upper echelon of the...
