Ronnie Brown joined the Chargers running attack this offseason with high hopes from Head Coach Norv Turner and the rest of the offense. Around the league, we see a trend of two back offenses being successful.

Mathews and Brown will no doubt be looking to be atop the list of great running back tandems.

When you look at a two/multiple running back systems around the league, typically what you see is a premier back with elite speed and home-run ability in one back, and to compliment, a larger more bowling ball type for third down or goal line situations.

This model can be seen in multiple outlets around the league. In New York there was Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, and Oakland’s Darren McFadden and Michael Bush. Many other teams fit the same mold.

The same equation will be used in San Diego. Ryan Mathews will be the all-purpose back with speed to get around the edge and make the big plays, and Brown finding his contribution primarily on third down due to his size and strength. (Although that’s not to say Brown doesn’t still have speed.)

Both Mathews and Brown have been in successful tandems in the past. Which will make for more of a team atmosphere rather than a competitive one.

Brown also brings a unique threat to the Chargers offense.

After using the wildcat offense so efficiently in Miami, Coach Norv Turner will look to play with the option of the intriguing offense play set.

Mathews and Brown will become one of the premier running back tandems of the league this year and will cause many problems for any opposing teams defense.
