Amid all the hubbub surrounding the bountygate scandal, it’s easy to forget that the New Orleans Saints have done a heck of a job retaining most of their top talent during the free agency period. Add Courtney Roby to that list as James Varney of the Times-Picayune reports that the Saints reached an agreement with the special teams ace on a one-year contract.
An excellent tackler on kickoff and punt returns, Roby has two fumble recoveries to his credit during his time with the Saints. He has also been prolific as a punt and kick returner in New Orleans, having recorded 2,411 return yards off of 94 returns for a stellar average of 25.6 yards. He has a return touchdown to his credit as well.
Roby’s best year came in 2009 when he piled up 1,154 return yards off 42 returns for a 27.5 yard average. With the arrival of Darren Sproles last year, however, Roby hasn’t been utilized as a returner. Roby played for the Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts prior to arriving in New Orleans in 2008.
