While watching the Saints’ defense get dismantled by Cam Newton and the Panthers, I realized I hadn’t had that much fun since that time I was at a construction site and a rusty nail went through my foot. But as painful as it was to watch, I must say I walked away from Sunday’s horrid ordeal with a positive outlook. You see unlike in week 1, this week I was smart enough to stock up on both beer AND wine before the game.

Oh wait…you thought I saw something positive in that crap-tacular display we put on the field? Don’t be silly, little birdies! I’ve pulled things out of my dog’s butt that looked better than our alleged “defense.” We couldn’t tackle. We couldn’t cover. We couldn’t even use common sense…as in, making sure, oh I don’t know, SOMEONE keeps an eye on the potential future hall of fame wide receiver when he’s on the field. It would be embarrassing if it weren’t so damn silly.

And then there’s Drew. Our $100 million dollar man. We’ve cut him a lot of slack in the past, but he’s got to know that an errant throw that leads to a pick six is not exactly the return on our investment we were hoping for. Part of the reason for his poor play is that he’s not getting a lot of time in the pocket. Perhaps that’s because we had to dismantle our offensive line in order to pay for his hefty contract.

Overall, the Saints didn’t look like a team without a coach. They looked like a team without a clue. But I STILL have faith they’ll bounce back. Perhaps the Steve Spagnuola defense just needs a little time to set in? That’s what the defensive coach seems to think. Here’s what he said in a post game news conference:

“There was no finger pointing. All there was was resolve. They all realize we’re going through some growing pains here, but I think the growing pains will pay off in the end.”

The good news is, the defense faces the Chiefs next week. If you can’t look good against them, you may as well start uploading your resume to monster.com. The other positive is that this is a league where timing is everything. How many teams do you see starting the season hot, only to fizzle in the end? (I’m looking at you, Cowgirls!) Perhaps these early headaches will make the Saints a more well rounded team down the stretch. Either that, or Jack Daniels and I are in for a long, sordid love affair this fall.
