Danario Alexander’s career finally appeared to be taking off. After suffering through repeated injuries during his first three seasons in the NFL, he found at home with the San Diego Chargers midway through the 2012 season and flourished. He followed that up with an excellent first week of training camp this year. Unfortunately that’s where the happy part of this story ends. The Chargers are now reporting that Alexander tore the ACL in his right knee during Tuesday’s practice and he will miss the entire 2013 season. Not only is the news devastating to San Diego’s depth at wide receiver, it’s even more brutal for Alexander, whose left knee had previously given him so much trouble. Alexander has undergone a ridiculous five knee operations since his sophomore year in college. The Missouri product certainly has the talent to be an outstanding receiver in the NFL, he just can’t seem to stay healthy. With both knees now gimpy, it’s fair to wonder if he will ever play again. Last season Alexander played his first game for the Chargers in Week 8 of the regular season. He went on to suit up in 10 contests and caught 37 passes for 658 yards (17.8 yards per catch) and seven touchdowns. It was an absolute breakout performance after two years struggling with the St. Louis Rams. At 6-5 and 217 pounds, Alexander is an imposing force at receiver, but he went undrafted out of Missouri in 2010 because of concerns about his left knee. The Rams signed him but it seems that fears about his ability to stay healthy have been realized. It really is a shame because the 24-year-old Alexander was really fun to watch when healthy in 2012 and most of his teammates have raved about what a great guy he is. It seemed like everyone around the NFL was rooting for him. Here is hoping he eventually returns to the game and can stay healthy.
