Given the uncertainty of a new stadium deal and the possibility of relocating to Los Angeles, the San Diego Chargers are staying put in 2013. San Diego mayor Bob Filner told members of the media on Tuesday that the Chargers will not be moving in 2013 and have not filed paperwork to explore the option of moving out of the region.
The Chargers confirmed the mayor’s comments later on Tuesday. “We informed Mayor Filner that we would not be exercising our lease’s termination clause in 2013, nor would we be filing an application with the NFL to relocate to Los Angeles in 2013,” said Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani.
The Chargers have wanted a new stadium deal, but no agreement has been reached as of yet. The mayor suggested the city will do everything they can in order to keep the Chargers from moving. “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that our Bolts don’t bolt,” said Filner.
