At Candlestick Park on Thursday Night, the 49ers and Seahawks matched defensive efforts in slugfest in San Francisco. Tough, hard-nosed football was on display, with each team laying the wood on each other with big hits and crunching defensive play.In games like this, usually one or two mistakes will make all the difference in the world. There can be no miscues or untimely turnovers, as these typically will be the flat tire on the road to victory. The Hero of the Game belongs to San Francisco Running Back Frank Gore. Remember that movie Old School, in which actor Will Ferrell's nickname was 'Frank the Tank', well Mr. Gore borrowed that nickname Thursday in San Francisco.Gore rushed for 131 bruising yards, most into the teeth of the Seattle defense. Gore also added 51 yards receiving, clearly being the focal point and production leader for the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday night. With a national television audience watching the key NFC match-up, Frank Gore and company took over sole possession of first place for now. Gore is the heartbeat of the 49ers offense, and has been their leader on the field for a few seasons, and usually as he goes, so go the 49ers.The Zero of the Game gets put on Russell Wilson and his overall performance on Thursday night. While he was not awful, he definitely struggled as he was indoctrinated in to this heated rivalry between the 49ers and Seahawks. Wilson's stat-line for the game was 9/23 for 122 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. Wilson was also sacked two times, and had a second half to forget. After halftime, Russell Wilson completed only two passes, a third on their final offensive play of the fourth quarter was negated by a chop block penalty in the end zone. While still a rookie, Wilson is learning each game, and his performance on Thursday night in San Francisco may not be one to save for the highlight reels; and at times showed he has much to learn as he matures and gains poise for the NFL game.Maybe you can just chalk it up to what we all call 'a tough day on the job'.
