San Francisco 49ers (9-3-1) at New England Patriots (10-3) Normally, I like betting against big line movements because they tend to be overreactions based off 1 week. Last week, this line was -3 and now it’s -5, which is a pretty significant line movement. However, that’s reasonable in this case. Teams normally carry the momentum of a big MNF win into the next week. Teams are 28-11 ATS off a MNF win of 21+ since 2002. Besides, all the line movement did was move the line to where it should be. These are the top 2 teams in the NFL, in my opinion, but everything suggests that the Patriots, right now, are the league’s best team. They are +198 in points differential. The 49ers are next closest at +132. The Patriots rank 1st in net points per drive, DVOA, and weighted DVOA and all 3 by a fairly good margin. The Patriots are at 1.17 in net points per drive, while the 49ers, who are 2nd, are at 0.95. If you take the difference between those, multiply by 11 (the amount of average drives per ...

Randy Moss: Colin Kaepernick throws so hard he dislocated my finger

Colin Kaepernick had made a lot of plays with his legs for the San Francisco 49ers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t throw. Not only has he completed more than 67% of his passes this season, but Kaepernick is also capable of putting some zip on the ball and sticking it into tight spots. Randy Moss said that is the reason he recently suffered the first dislocated finger...

Rob Gronkowski practices, not expected to play against 49ers

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski participated in Friday’s practice but he’s not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the 49ers. I’m told that, though he did get out to practice today, it’s still considered unlikely that Rob Gronkowski will play on Sunday. — Albert Breer (@AlbertBreer) December 14, 2012 Right now it looks like Gronkowski is on pace to...

The 1998 New England Patriots & Scott Zolak’s Finest Hour Against San Francisco

Scott Zolak’s finest hour came with a late drive to beat San Francisco and put the 1998 Patriots in the playoffs. The New England Patriots’ Sunday night battle with the San Francisco 49ers is a significant game for both teams as they angle for playoff position. The Patriots are playing to at least wrap up a first-round bye and possibly to get the AFC’s #1 seed. San Francisco...

Patriots Injury Report: Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Wes Welker

It appears the New England Patriots are set to head into another week with a ton of players listed as questionable on their injury report as tight end Aaron Hernandez and wide receiver Wes Welker have been limited at practice this week, while tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was reportedly on the verge of returning to practice this week, hasn’t been able to suit up due to his forearm...

Moss learned football 'A to Z' from Belichick

Randy Moss joined the New England Patriots five years ago thinking he knew a lot about football. Then, he began playing for Bill Belichick. Moss' mindset regarding his own football knowledge changed in a hurry. Only then did he learn the intricacies of his sport from ''A to Z,'' as the 49ers wide receiver now puts it.

The San Francisco 49ers Take on the New England Patriots This Sunday with Playoff Implications on the Line

This Sunday night the San Francisco 49ers will have to endure their greatest test of the season as they travel to take on the New England Patriots. With a win against the Patriots the 49ers will clinch the NFC west division and at least clinch a wildcard spot for the playoffs. What’s even more important with a victory, is the knowledge that they can afford to rest some of their...

Preview: 49ers vs Patriots

It’s been two weeks since the San Francisco 49ers officially went with quarterback Colin Kaepernick as their full-time starter over Alex Smith. Since then, the team is 1-1 and Kaepernick has received mixed reviews. Despite more pure talent than Smith and a bigger arm, the offense hasn’t been as explosive as it initially was when he took over several weeks ago, and the hype has...

Vote: Would You Rather See Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith Starting Against the Patriots on Sunday Night?

Quarterback controversies can often be a death sentence for a potential playoff team. Just take a quick glance at the current state of the Jets for a prime example. But what the 49ers have out in San Francisco is exactly what any contender dreams of. Coming into this season, Alex Smith was viewed as a quarterback finally on the rise. He led — and I use that term lightly, because...

Rob Gronkowski returns to practice

Gronk is back at practice. It appears that Kyle Love is the only Patriot missing. Sweats and shells, inside Gillette Stadium.— Michael Whitmer (@GlobeWhitmer) December 14, 2012Is this a sign that Gronkowski will play Sunday night against the 49ers? No way in hell. However, it's definitely a positive sign that he's on track with his recovery. The initial time table that was...

Fantasy Forecast: Week 15

QB Tom Brady It’s tough to ever advise benching Brady in a fantasy league, but owners who have a top-rate backup with a better matchup could at least consider the possibility. The 49ers are tough against the pass, and this game doesn’t figure to be a points bonanza. Brady is probably still good for 280 and 2 scores, but that is not an automatic start for most teams who are...

Getting to Brady could be key for 49ers

As Aldon Smith chases down the NFL record for sacks, his specialty becomes of particular significance this week when the San Francisco 49ers face New England and the NFL's top-ranked offense. The Patriots have encountered problems most often this season when opponents put quarterback Tom Brady on his back. Nobody in the league has done that to quarterbacks this season better...

New England Patriots: Week 15 NFL Power Rankings (#1)

Last week: 1 (+0) Record: 10-3 Net points per drive: 1.17 (1st) DVOA: 41.8% (1st) Weighted DVOA: 45.8% (1st) Tom Brady improved to 26-11 in his career against teams with a better record than his with his win over the Texans last week. That’s unreal. The Patriots are +198 on the season. The 49ers are closest at +132. They already have wins over the Texans and Broncos and if they...
