Ricky Pearsall won't be able to wear number one for the San Francisco 49ers in his rookie season, as that is already claimed by Deebo Samuel, so their first-round pick is instead set to don a jersey number synonymous with a franchise great and Pro Football Hall of Famer, at least for rookie minicamp.
Pearsall will wear number 14 for the 49ers, it was confirmed on Wednesday as San Francisco's rookie jersey numbers for the camp were released.
That was last worn by Sam Darnold in 2023 but is most famous for being worn by quarterback Y.A. Tittle during his 10-season spell with the 49ers from 1951 to 1960.
Second-round cornerback Renardo Green will wear number 31, which previously belonged to safety Tashaun Gipson.
Numbers assigned to #49ers undrafted rookies:
— Matt Maiocco (@MaioccoNBCS) May 1, 2024
4-QB Tanner Mordecai
38-RB Cody Schrader
84-WR Terique Owens
89-TE Mason Pline
66-C Drake Nugent
69-C Briason Mays
66-DL Evan Anderson
49-S Jaylen Mahoney
Also notable is that Terique Owens, the son of Hall of Famer Terrell, will wear 84. His father's number 81 is owned by second-year tight end Cameron Latu.
Owens could ask Latu for a swap later in the offseason but, given he is likely facing an uphill battle to make the team, at this point that is unlikely to be his focus.
The 49ers are scheduled to beginning rookie minicamp on May 9.
