The San Francisco 49ers stayed busy on the free agent market last week, as they added two key positions to the lineup. And they still have 14 picks to work with in the upcoming NFL draft. The 49ers are making it pretty clear that they, despite losing some popular guys to free agency, have every intention of going to the Super Bowl Again. Their most notable addition last week was kicker Phil Dawson, whom they acquired in free agency after the Cleveland Browns failed to renew his contract. Dawson spent 14 years with the Cleveland franchise, and his last year there just might have been his finest. It’s a wonder why the Browns would let him go, but it is great news for the 49ers faithful. Especially after living through the struggles of the recently released David Akers. Dawson last year connected on 29 of his 31 field goal attempts, for a 94% rate, and he was a perfect six for six from 40 to 50 yards and a perfect seven for seven at 50 plus yards. He was the favorite for the 49ers going into free agency, even at 38 years old. And though they only signed him to a one-year contract, it’s quite possible he gets a payday next year. The 49ers are very cautious with veteran kickers now. Even Akers was a genius his first year with the 49ers, so they have every right to be wary in that department. But it’s clear that Dawson was their guy from the outset, and the future for him and the 49ers looks better and better. The 49ers also signed safety Craig Dahl to a three-year deal last week. Dahl is a hard-hitting safety that has spent the last four seasons with the St. Louis Rams franchise. With the Rams last year he was among the top five in total tackles on the team, and had one interception to his credit. His addition is a huge boost in moral after the 49ers lost Dashon Goldson to free agency earlier this year. Not only do his statistics match up admirably to Goldsons, but also the 49ers get him a lot cheaper than what Goldson was asking for. The only statistic that Goldson had the advantage over Dahl last year was interceptions. Goldson had three and Dahl had one. But that statistic could be attributed to defensive scheme as well, so it is a win-win situation for the 49ers. There is still a lot to be done in free agency for the 49ers yet. They need a back up quarterback, which they are working out a few this week. They need a back up tight end, which they might be able to get in the draft. And they need a punt returner if Kyle Williams does not come back healthy enough to take on the role. So there is still work to be done, but the path being taken can sure excite 49ers fans so far.  Be sure to check out other great articles at Sports Media 101.
