The San Francisco 49ers finished last season as the eighth best rushing team in the league, however finished 29th in passing. The last time that the San Francisco 49ers had a receiver gain 1,000 or more yards in a season, the year was 2003, the quarterback was Jeff Garcia and the receiver was Terrell Owens. This past season Michael Crabtree came closest to 1,000 yards, with 874.

If San Francisco is going to improve and get past the NFC Championship Game, they are going to need to focus more on the passing game. Therefore, one focus of San Francisco’s offseason needs to be at the wide receiver position.

One of the best free agent possibilities for San Francisco would be Reggie Wayne. There is question of whether or not Wayne will remain in Indianapolis and if not he would be a good target for quarterback Alex Smith.

Wayne is an older receiver who could bring experience to a San Francisco receiving corps where the oldest receivers are only 26. Wayne is also a reliable receiver who has played in 16 games a season since 2002, and has recorded 900 or more receiving yards in the last eight seasons, with just eight fumbles in his career.

Additionally, if Peyton Manning is out in Indianapolis, it may benefit Wayne to be catching passes from Smith rather than Andrew Luck or whoever is starting in Indianapolis next season.

San Francisco is in a good place and if they play smart in free agency and in the Draft they could be playing in Super Bowl XLVII.
