Santana Moss catches a go-ahead TD from RGIII vs the Giants   This connection could be picking up steam in the next few weeks He shouldn’t be doing what he is doing right now, but he is. At 33 years old, receiver Santana Moss is proving he still has gas in the tank: 19 catches for 240 yards and four touchdowns (10 catches, 87 yards, one touchdown in first four games), which if you do the quick math means that as this season progresses, Moss is only getting better. Kind of funny that I am sitting here at my desk typing about a 33 year old receiver that many people, myself included, had completely written off this season. This off-season, the Redskins added receivers Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan in free agency spending 54.5 million dollars to help boost a receiving core that had mostly been just Moss over the previous handful of seasons. Washington also has Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson to help add depth. So the real question becomes what did $54.5 million worth of WR upgrades buy us this off-season? I’ll tell you… it bought us 26 receptions, 370 yards, and 2* touchdowns through 7 games between the 2 receivers so far this season, not to mention Josh Morgan throwing a ball at Cortland Finnegan at the end of a play during the final drive of the St. Louis game and drawing a 15 yard penalty that pushed us just outside of Cundiff’s limited range. The fact that only Morgan has played all 7 games, and that 1 of Pierre Garcon’s 2 touchdowns came off a fumble recovery in the end zone (and the other of course came off the second series in the first game for 88 yards), that seems like some funny math so far when you think that for $500K more we could have simply paid for 1 receiver, Vincent Jackson ( who has 216 more yards and 3 more touchdowns). Washington also would have gotten a receiver who would have started in 6 games instead of a foot issue that has been down played by the Shanahan ego machine since day 1, and a life long underachiever (Morgan) who has never truly found his way playing at the NFL level. Garcon’s deal was a blockbuster: five years for $42.5 million with $20.5 million guaranteed, including an $11 million signing bonus. Morgan agreed to a contract worth $12 million over the first two years, with $7.5 million guaranteed. His full contract is for five years, but the final three can be voided. Thank Bruce Allen for at least getting that last part in there. Despite Garcon’s injury woes and Morgans limited contributions the Redskins have been having great success on offense so far this season. They’re ranked 5th in the league in total offense based on yards per game, and are currently tied for 3rd in scoring offense. RGIII is the NFL’s 3rd rated passer, and he has the best completion percentage in the NFL. Santana Moss has been a big part of their success in the past couple weeks, picking up production where the highly touted free agents are lacking. The last 4 weeks Moss has 12 receptions, but he has made it count on those catches. He has 226 yards over those last 4 games, an average of 18.8 yards per catch showing he can still make a big play. Add in his 3 touchdowns over that same period, and he is pacing the WR core and will likely continue to make a big impact on the passing game. And with Redskins leading reciever Fred Davis out for the rest of the season with a torn achilles, the Redskins will look to a man who has been here all along for help, a man who bleeds burgundy and gold, a man named Santana.
