Browns Bites:
So CBS Sportsline.com and virtually every other sports media outlet reported today that Brady Quinn has a broken index finger on his throwing hand. It's being said that after practice on Wednesday, Quinn complained of soreness in his throwing (and picking) finger, and x-rays revealed a hairline fracture. Word on the street is that Quinn will wear a splint on the finger when he is not on the field, and will enter the game without it. Umm, okay. What's going on on the Brown's sideline if he has to wear a splint when he isn't playing in the game? Maybe Braylon is warming up his throwing arm, and Brady is catching the balls thrown back to him? Makes you wonder if he gives the same treatment to his cup too. "It's just too restrictive when I'm on the field, and center, Hank Fraley doesn't like it either". Whatever, my beloved Browns have much bigger problems going on than Brady's broken finger; we have a General Manager's ego at stake!
By now, I'm sure most of you have heard about the story that was first reported on Deadspin, GM Phil Savage responded to a nasty fan's email after Monday night's game by saying, "Go root for Buffalo-f#@* you-". Okay then. What's wrong with that? Short, sweet, simple....innapropriate, inexcusable and slightly crazy. This guy is the president and general manager of one of the 32 greatest businesses in the country, and this is how he responds to an angry fan? What did the guy say? Did he accuse Savage of having bad breath or not being able to tie his shoes? I know, I know, you're all probably saying there are so few crazy and passionate fans in Cleveland, that this probably just caught poor Phil off guard. "Cleveland fans just don't take wins and losses that hard, not with our storied history", and you're probably right. But still, this guy is at the end of his seemingly microscopic fuse, and it's showing. Big time.
Just two weeks ago, Savage publicly called out his best offensive player, Kellen Winslow, implying that K2 was laid up in the clinic for a lot more than just (another) staph infection. Now, there were rumors that Winslow had an infection of a slightly more embarrassing nature that commonly leads to wealthy football players parting with 50% of their net worth (or in Michael Strahan's case, about 65%. There ARE other divorce attorneys in New York, Mike), but you absolutely can not take pot shots at your premier players like that like that in the NFL, and still expect top tier free agents to come and play for you. We'll be making Javon Walker and Tommy Kelly's contracts look like mid-level exceptions for guys like Troy Williamson and Amon Gordon.
Savage is committing career suicide here in the same fashion that you only see in movies. Or in the Oakland Raiders front office. We in Cleveland have had enough bad luck and misfortune in the past that we do not need to be sabotaged by our own senior vice president. This organization was once proud and shrouded in success with great history and Hall of Fame players. Now, we've been a practice squad since we got back into the league, our coaches have gone from ineffective to overmatched to crazy-insane to completely and utterly clueless, and now our team president and GM is making us look like the Raiders 2.0??? Come one Phil, haven't we (you) suffered enough already?
