By all accounts, Geno Smith has epitomized a typical NFL rookie quarterback. His highs have been impressively high, his lows have been embarrassingly low, and we've seen just about everything else in between.

Fans have said Smith is ascending. Critics have jumped off the bandwagon. Joe Bommarito has taken the Denny Green approach -- he is who he thought he was.

Bommarito, a former Jets scout, told The Star-Ledger the "consensus" among the team was that Smith is not a franchise quarterback.

"The consensus was that he can be a decent quarterback, we're not looking at a superstar here," Bommarito said.  "He can be a good quarterback – a solid one."

Owner of 13 interceptions -- including three pick-sixes in two weeks -- Smith has looked very much like a work in progress. Yes, the Jets are off to a 4-4 start, but much of it has come in spite of Smith, not because of him.

Bommartio, who spent 12 years with the Jets, hints Gang Green was well aware of this scenario when they took the ex-Mountaineer with the 39th overall pick.

"We knew it was going to take some time," Bommarito said. "It is part of the process. There's some pretty good quarterbacks who, in their second or third year, have pulled themselves up and have turned into good quarterbacks."

Whether Smith gets that time to develop remains unclear. The Jets have a lame duck head coach and figure to tweak their roster this offseason. If Smith continues to implode on a weekly basis, the team is likely to draft another QB.

In the meantime, says Bommartio, his maddening inconsistency will be on display.

"I just think it is part of the deal; he wasn't ready right away," Bommarito said. "He wasn't ready, just like most young quarterbacks. Sometimes you see the brilliance, then sometimes you see that, yes, there is lots of work to be done."
