Found August 19, 2012 on Seattle Sports Nut:

Yes, it’s true, we are only halfway through the preseason.  But stats are always interesting, no matter when during the season, or preseason as it is.  It is time to take a look at what the Seahawks have actually accomplished so far.

First up is the offense.  Again, we’ve only had two preseason games under the belt to go off of, some of these guys are definitely giving their all to make the final roster.  Nfl.com is reporting that the Seahawks have managed 40 first downs.  They are 16/30 on third downs for a 53% conversion rate. Not necessarily great, but its a good number to start with.  Fourth down conversions are 1/1.  The offense has managed to gain 726 yards of total offense.  Amazingly enough, 363 of those yards is rushing, 363 yards is passing.

The QB’s who have led this campaign have seemed to breathe new life into the 12th man.  Matt Flynn is looking solid and patient, while Russell Wilson is amazing and athletic.  Both of these QB’s have a legitimate chance at starting for the Seahawks this year.  With only two games into the preseason, both of these guys have played basically one full game.  Matt Flynn has played the first half in both games, while Russell Wilson played the second half in both games.  Josh Portis came in to finish out the game at Denver, but it was only a few snaps.

Matt Flynn’s stats : 17/26 102 yards, 1 int.  While these numbers aren’t overall impressive, there is something to be said for spreading the ball around with accuracy.  Flynn has showed a lot of poise and composure in the pocket, and is willing to take what the defense is giving him.  Flynn should have had a TD against the Broncos, but it went right through Terrell Owens’ hands.

Russell Wilson’s stats: 22/33 279 yards, 3 Tds, 1 int.  This is more of the number that you want from your starting QB.  Wilson’s stats could be a little padded since he is playing against the second and third string defenses.  In no way shape or form is that a knock on his ability.  Wilson, while ALL of the critics have maintained he is too short to play, has played bigger just to prove them wrong.  Wilson has shown great touch, and great pocket presence as well being able to get out of the pocket and run when there isn’t anything there.

Onto the running game, where the Seahawks have a few players scratching and fighting to run behind Marshawn Lynch.  Lynch himself took a few carries in the second game, but Pete Carroll is limiting his action so he doesn’t wind up hurt before the start of the season.  The other players behind Lynch are: Robert Turbin, Tyrell Sutton, Kregg Lumpkin, Vai Taua, and Leon Washington.

Marshawn Lynch has rushed 6 times for 37 yards(6.2 average). Same old Lynch bruising and running through defenses.

Robert Turbin has carried 20 times for 58 yards(2.9 average).  While Turbin is the heir apparent to Lynch, he is still getting used to the line and the schematics in Seattle.  He has looked fairly impressive so far also catching out of the infield.

Kregg Lumpkin: 15 rushes for 61 yards, 1 TD(4.1 average).  Lumpkin has been impressive so far during the two games, he has been solid at picking the holes and bursting through.

Tyrell Sutton: 5 rushes for 51 yards(10.2 average).  Sutton had a monster game versus the Broncos, and has been really impressive so far as well.

The other name that has to be added to this list is none other than Russell Wilson.  He has tucked the ball and ran 8 times, and he has amassed 92 yards and 1 TD.  Wilson has shown that he has great athleticism and isn’t afraid of taking the hit to get the first down for his team.  He is a very electrifying player to watch.

While the QB’s and RB’s are doing their jobs, the receiving core has gotten almost no recognition.  We have a lot of receivers in camp, and probably not even half will make the team.  While no players are a certainty, Sidney Rice isn’t going anywhere.  All of the other players are still trying to show the coaches just how important they are to the team.

Robert Turbin is leading the team with 5 receptions.  He has only amassed 19 yards though.  Deon Butler is hot on his trail with 4 catches for 26 yards.  Anthony McCoy, Sean McGrath, and Via Taua all have 3 receptions, 39, 35, 14 respectively.  Following them up are Leon Washington, 2 catches for 5 yards; Golden Tate, 2 catches for 13 yards; Charly Martin, 2 catches 21 yards; Kregg Lumpkin, 2 catches for 22 yards; Zach Miller has grabbed 2 for 23 yards; Tyrell Sutton as well has 2 catches for 39 yards; Braylon Edwards has 2 snags for 51 yards.  Coming in with only 1 reception is the rest of the pack: Jermaine Kearse, 37 yards; Kellen Winslow, 11 yards; Lavasier Tuinei, 8 yards; Cooper Helfet, 8 yards; Michael Robinson and Cameron Morrah each with 4 yards; and Phil Bates with 2 yards.

The Special Teams units have been fairly impressive overall so far as well.  Steven Hauschka, and Jon Ryan are booting the ball very well, and doing exactly what they need to be doing.  Hauschka is 5 of 5 right now on field goals.  Jon Ryan has punted the ball 7 times, with three of those being downed inside the 20.

Now the defense is a different story all together.  They are a strong group of guys that are striving to break into the top 5 overall.  The defense has forced 3 fumbles and 4 interceptions already during 8 quarters of football.  K.J. Wright, Jeron Johnson, Richard Sherman, and Brandon Browner have all picked off opposing QB’s.  Heath Farwell, Jeron Johnson, and Jeremy Lane have all caused fumbles.  Pete Carroll is always preaching ball control, there is always interceptions or fumbles to be had.  Two games into the season, the Seahawks are at a +3 turnover rating. The only bad stat so far is the sack total, in eight quarters the Seahawks have 2 sacks.  Chris Clemons and Bruce Irvin have totalled nothing so far, but neither have Brandon Mebane, Jason Jones or Alan Branch.

While the defense will continue to be stingy, they are first in the NFL right now for rushing yards at 61.5 per game(nfl.com).  They are 19th in the league for passing yards though at 214.5.  Overall they are 11th at 276 yards.  The offense is slowly coming along, they are 3rd in rushing, 4th in total points, and 5th in overall yards.  They are 18th in the passing game. The Seahawks are slowly finding their way and who they are.  With a few more guys stepping up in certain situations they could be a top 10 team. Two games into the preseason and the Seahawks are showing why other teams are starting to not take Seattle lightly.  They are no longer a push-over. no longer the easy win they once were.
