The Seahawks bags are packed and they are headed for St. Louis. The next game in the season is already upon us, as Seattle takes on the second team in their division. Seattle has managed to eke out a 2-1 record, to St. Louis’ 1-2 record.
Seattle is one of the top teams in defense so far this year. Nfl.com is ranking them 4th overall with defensive yardage allowed. Seattle manages to only give up 272.3 yards per game. On that same list compiled, St. Louis is ranking 19th overall allowing 358.7 yards per game. Seattle sits in 2nd place with rushing defense, only allowing 176 yards in 3 games(average 58.7). St. Louis is allowing 120.7 rushing yards per game, putting them in 21st place. Seattle is allowing 213.7 yards a game through the air, placing them 10th in the league, while St. Louis is slightly behind at 238 yards per game through the air ranking them 16th. Seattle ranks at 5th in sacks(10 total) after they posted 8 sacks against the Green Bay offense on Monday. St. Louis has only managed 4 sacks total, placing them 27th. St. Louis has managed to pick off 5 different passes, placing them 5th overall, while Seattle has picked off 2 passes, placing them 15th. Seattle is ranked 1st overall in forced fumbles with 5, while St. Louis hasn’t managed a single fumble on defense yet, putting them dead last in the league.
Over on the offensive side of the ball, the Seahawks are averaging 269 yards a game(127.7 passing(32nd) and 141.3 rushing(6th)) ranking them 29th overall. The Rams are amassing 287.3 yards a game(191.7 passing(27th) and 95.7 rushing(20th)) ranking them 28th overall. The Seahawks are currently holding onto a +2 turnover ratio, while the Rams are sitting at an even 0.
St. Louis and Seattle have battled each other 28 times. Seattle is currently holding the lead, winning 17 of those times. 13 of those 28 games have been played in St. Louis. Of those 13 times, Seattle has won 7 of those. In the last 14 games versus the Rams, the Seahawks has managed to win 13 of them. This season, the Rams are off to a 1-2 start, losing on the road to Detroit(23-27) and Chicago(6-23), but winning at home versus the Washington Redskins(31-28). The Seahawks have managed a 2-1 record, winning at home versus Dallas(27-7) and Green Bay(14-12), and lost on the road to division rival Arizona(16-20).
The Rams face still competition in the form of the Seahawks defense. The young secondary is looking for even more recognition after holding Aaron Rodgers without a single touchdown. The defensive line in Seattle is flying high after sacking Rodgers 8 times in the first half of the game last week. Seattle needs to stay focused in order to win this game, St. Louis is a division rival that knows the ins and outs of what Seattle does. This will be the first time the Seahawks have faced the Jeff Fisher ran Rams, but they should be able to muscle a win out. The Rams are still trying to form an identity for themselves and still working some kinks out.
The Seahawks have let it known they are keeping a tight leash on Russell Wilson and his abilities. Look for those reins to be loosened a little bit more this week. Marshawn Lynch is still grinding away at his game quietly, and still not getting a whole lot of national attention. Lynch and Wilson working together again this week is one of the keys to winning this game. Lynch’s legs running through the gaps followed up by the threat of Wilson either running or passing seems to be keeping opposing teams off kilter. Seattle’s defense has been forcing turnovers and making the other teams pay with sacks and interceptions and fumbles. This week they need to do the same routine they have been doing to achieve greatness. Sam Bradford will be leading his offense into this game looking to force the ball down the Seahawks throats. The Seahawks are out to prove that no quarterback is going to do that to them!
