Seahawks Free Agency: Drew Lock Out?
© Joe Nicholson, USA TODAY

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock is a free agent and he could find himself with a new team here very soon.

As the Seahawks ' backup quarterback to Geno Smith for the past two seasons, Lock has been serviceable. He made four appearances in 2023, including two starts. In his final start against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football, Lock completed 22 of 33 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown in a comeback win that included a 29-yard game-winning score to rookie receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba with less than a minute to go.

But with his contract expiring and the Seahawks in need of bringing in some youth at the position, Lock's time in Seattle may be coming to an end. As for his next destination? ESPN suggests a possible solution.

The Carolina Panthers recently hired former Seahawks quarterback coach Dave Canales as their head coach, and Lock's ties with him could make him an option to be Bryce Young's backup.

Canales coached with the Seahawks in a couple different roles from 2010-22. In his final season in Seattle, he served as Lock's quarterback coach before taking the job to become the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator.

Now, Canales is tasked with helping develop last year's No. 1 overall pick in Young, and Lock could be a tool to help him do that.

The NFL's legal tampering period begins tomorrow at 9 a.m. PT before free agency officially kicks off at 1 p.m. PT on Wednesday.
