Found August 13, 2012 on Seattle Sports Nut:

In the second quarter of the first preseason game, just incase you didn’t watch, Zach Miller caught a pass from Matt Flynn.  Upon catching it, he was drilled by Kamerion Wimbley and Terrence Wheatley.  Miller managed to walk off the field with some help from a trainer.  It had later come out that Miller sustained a concussion and wouldn’t return.

With concussions being a serious issue lately in the NFL, the league is taking no chances with them.  Miller has already sustained two different concussions while he was with the Raiders back in 2009.  Holding Miller out until he gets better is the only logical thing Pete Carroll can do.  Carroll doesn’t believe the concussion to be a severe one, but it’s certainly better to be safe than sorry.

So where does that leave the Seahawks on tight ends?  We all know about Kellen Winslow: he was brought in during the off-season to bolster what Zach Miller could provide.  Having a two tight end set has been a focus of the Carroll regime since he got here.  Last year, it was supposed to be John Carlson and Zach Miller becoming the feared duo.  Carlson went down early and was placed on IR, and Miller never really got the chance to catch some passes due to the offensive line needing help.

The other tight ends in camp haven’t really proven themselves worthy of the role the Seahawks expect to have.  Anthony McCoy has been steadily improving, but his inability to catch a pass has a lot of people wondering.  Cameron Morrah hasn’t still quite got the grasp of everything he needs to do either.  This all leaves rookies Sean McGrath and Cooper Helfet as possibilities, but they are young and still learning the system.

Bringing Miller back is a must, but the Seahawks have to be smart about it.  Being as it is still only the first preseason game, there is absolutely no need to rush him back to see playing time.  Kellen Winslow, or even one of the two new rookies, can try to fill the void.  Perhaps one of the rookies will breakout like Doug Baldwin did last year for the Seahawks; only time will tell.  There has been no timetable stated yet for when Miller will return.  But, as soon as there are updates, we will let you know!
