Seahawks come out swinging Earlier in the week I wrote a piece about why the upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills concerned me.  The Seahawks wasted no time relieving me of my concerns as they scored on their first 5 possession, before finally punting the ball on their 6th.  By that time the Seahawks offense had already scored 31-points. In-fact, the Seahawks became just the third team in NFL history to score 50 points or more in consecutive games, the first team since 1950. That wasn’t the only thing that happened on Sunday that had historical significance, Russell Wilson became the first quarterback in franchise history to rush for three touchdowns in a single game.  Due in large part to the “Read Option” offense. I am not a fan of running the “Read Option” offense in the National Football League.  It is a gimmick, and gimmicks never work out over the long term. Do you remember a few years back when everyone was buzzing about the “Wild-Cat,” more Seattle specific the “Sene-Cat?”  That never really worked out in Seattle, but other teams had success running it for a couple years. The point is, these type of college style offenses get diagnosed by defensive coordinators and are rendered useless.  When teams build around the gimmick schemes and they quit working, they are left anemic on offense. That is why I do not like gimmicks…  But this might be different Sure, the Seahawks are using a gimmick offense, but maybe a quarterback like Russell Wilson can make it work over the long term. Maybe it just adds another weapon to the Seahawks arsenal.  The Buffalo Bills were unable to handle what the Seahawks were throwing at them, that is for sure. The Seahawks play pretty darn good in the Wolf Grey don’t they? When you have a star as bright as Wilson, why not tailor an offense to make him as potent as possible?  That is exactly what Darrell Bevell has done.  As much as I have ripped him about some of his play calling in the past, especially calling the same play over and over again, this is brilliant. He is getting every ounce out of Russell, who has become the leader of this team. When teams start committing time and resources to stopping the “Read Option,” Russell is going to rip their secondary to shreds.  As good as his legs are, I think he is actually a better passer. I have never been shy to discuss my disdain for running quarterbacks.  They never work out over the long term, they are always injured, and they never win the big games.  Russell Wilson isn’t one of those, he is a quarterback who has the ability to run when asked, or forced to, but his arm is what makes him deadly. The defense continues to be “Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde.” During the first half they were on the field for 6 possessions, three of those were “3 and outs” and the other three were Buffalo scoring drives. Suddenly the unit that everyone expected to carry the team has become the one that is causing me to lose what little hair I have left. There are reports of an outbreak of Grey hair around Elliott Bay. Speaking of gray, how about those “Wolf Grey”  jerseys? My favorite combination has to be the Grey top with the Blue bottoms, but after a 34 point victory, I am all for going with the Wolf Grey for every away game. That might have been the best that the Seahawks have played on the road during the current front office. The Seahawks are now 1-0 in regular season games that are held outside of the United States, in contrast to the 0-2 mark they have established during the preseason.  In the process they have guaranteed a winning record for the first time since 2007. That year the Seahawks lost the division playoff round to Green Bay in what would be Mike Holmgren’s last playoff appearance as a head coach. One heck of a win for the Hawks, too bad the Patriots could not beat the 49ers on Sunday Night to set up an epic battle for first place in the NFC West next week.  With that said, if the Seahawks beat the 49ers on Sunday Night Football, they clinch a playoff spot for the first time since “Beastquake.” Go Seahawks!
