Seahawks Re-Sign Ahlers to Practice Squad
USA TODAY Sports

Having a third quarterback has become vital for just about every NFL team, and the Seattle Seahawks are no exception.

Although they already have Geno Smith  and Drew Lock, the Seahawks are making sure to be prepared for any scenario, something that was proven saw on Monday when they brought back the undrafted southpaw quarterback out of East Carolina, Holton Ahlers, who they waived at the end of August.

While he won't be on the 53-man roster, Ahlers will have a chance to be on the practice squad and help the team out by being the scout-team quarterback, according to reports. Ahlers spent the preseason with Seattle, and showed flashes of raw potential.

By adding Ahlers to the practice squad, Seattle now has a capable passer ready-and-waiting should disaster strike. Under the NFL's new “third QB rule,” Ahlers has a chance of being a game-day call-up if the team for some reason has an unforeseen issue at quarterback.

During the three preseason games that he played in, Ahlers had a decently strong showing. He went 16 of 27 passing, completing 59.3 percent of his passes, while throwing one touchdown and one interception. He compiled a QBR of 72.9 and only took one sack.

Ahlers was a star at ECU, shattering about every record possible. He finished his five-year career with nearly 14,000 passing yards, 97 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. He also showed the ability to hurt defenses with his legs, as he rushed for a career 1,444 yards and 25 rushing touchdowns.

Barring a catastrophic scenario that prevents both Smith and Lock from playing, we likely won't see him this season, but he did prove to be quite capable in the preseason.
