7 Make 2012 Practice Squad

The Practice Squad Explained - Each NFL team can establish an eight-player practice squad, by signing free agents who don’t have an accrued season of free-agency credit or who were on the 46-player active list for less than nine regular-season games during each of any accrued seasons. A player can’t be on the practice squad for more than three seasons.

The Seahawks have added 7 players to this years practice squad so far.  They still have one spot open or they could remove any of these players and replace them later in the year.

Just like the 53 man roster, the practice squad is fluid with Pete Carroll and John Schneider at the helm.

Ricardo Lockette

Looking at the players the Seattle Seahawks chose to keep, there are no real surprises.  Personally, I would not have signed Ricardo Lockette but I can understand why Pete Carroll chose to do it.

His speed is unique, for a frame as big as his, and if Pete can only get him to learn how to be a receiver he could become an outstanding offensive weapon.

Josh Portis

Josh Portis has shown he has not developed enough to play in the NFL.  Something about him leads Pete Carroll to keep him around.  I am of the impression that he has served his purpose.

He was given a season to realize some of his potential, yet I see very little growth, if any at all.

Sean McGrath

Sean McGrath played solid football from the tight end position.  I don’t think he is good enough at this point in his career to warrant a roster spot, but I do believe he can grow.

It would not surprise me if, at this time next year, we are talking about Sean McGrath being named to the Seahawks 53 man roster while Anthony McCoy or Evan Moore will be cut.

Rishaw Johnson

During the entire preseason I have been high on Rishaw Johnson.  On the second week of player grades on NWPS12.com I mentioned “the Seahawks might try to sneak him (Rishaw Johnson) onto the practice squad”.

Obviously, I am very happy bout this choice.

Korey Toomer

It makes complete sense to add Korey Toomer to the practice squad at this point.  He is far too green to be part of the active roster, nevertheless  he has outstanding size and athleticism.

With a little bit of work this kid could end up on a roster before the end of the season.  If that doesn’t happen, I think he will make it next year as long as he continues to grow.

Allen Bradford

The Seahawks also added linebacker Allen Bradford to the squad. Bradford is a converted running back, so this move gives him more time to learn the position before Seattle makes their final decision on him.

DeShawn Shead

DeShawn Shead is a fairly large defensive back in the NFL, of course in Seattle he’s one of the smaller guys.  He does a nice job crashing in on the run, but I haven’t seen enough of him in coverage to get a feel for him overall.

Clearly, he showed enough in practice to warrant Pete Carroll using a practice squad position on him.

If there is one position group that Pete knows it is definitely his defensive backs.
