Sean Payton gets real about Bo Nix quality that Broncos lacked during Russell Wilson era

The past couple of seasons have been rough for the Denver Broncos in terms of quarterback play. When Russell Wilson came over to Denver from the Seattle Seahawks, it looked like they were getting one of the best QBs in the league. Unfortunately for the Broncos, things didn’t pan out with Wilson. He was never able to find a lot of success there, and now he is with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos picked QB Bo Nix in the first round of the NFL Draft a couple weeks ago, and they are hoping that he fares better than Wilson did in Denver.

So far, it sounds like Bo Nix is doing a good job in Denver. He hasn’t been there for very long, but Broncos head coach Sean Payton has been happy with what he has seen from the young QB.

Location of throws,” Sean Payton said, according to an article from NFL.com. “He had two or three down-the-field throws today. It’s almost like watching a good golfer. Sometimes when you watch his game over two years, there’s a patience to how he plays. The ball comes out and — I don’t want to use the term boring, that’s not the right term — but pretty good decisions with each play. The efficiency with how he’s operating. All of that.”

Being compared to a good golfer is certainly a good thing. Being a good golfer takes lot of patience, and that’s a trait that Nix has shown so far with the Broncos.

Sean Payton hasn’t been surprised by anything he has seen from Nix in terms of his play. The Broncos drafted him because they saw a lot of positives in the way he plays, and they have been seeing those positive traits so far.

“No, it’s been exactly what we saw,” Payton said. “The only thing I can think about that was a little bit of a surprise is when we went to work him out privately and stood around him, he was bigger than I expected. But nothing in the last two days. He’s doing well.”

Bo Nix was one of the top QBs in college football last season, and how early he was going to be drafted was certainly up in the air heading into the NFL Draft. The Broncos have a lot of faith in Nix as they took him in the first round, and he is fired up to be in Denver.

“Can’t believe I get to wear a Broncos jersey and go out there and do what so many greats have done before me,” Nix said. “I don’t take that lightly and I’m not gonna take it for granted. Obviously, pressure gives you opportunities, so the more pressure and responsibility you have, just the more that you have to go out there and consistently earn it.”

This is an exciting time for Broncos fans as they are entering a new era in terms of their starting QB. The Russell Wilson era didn’t go as planned, but Denver is hoping that Nix can be their next franchise QB.
