DEAN RUTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES Follow @Dan Vasta and like Gridiron Grit on Facebook  This has a knack for being a defensive slugfest that everybody should enjoy! Both defenses are fearless and talk a bunch of game, although they back it up with the best of them. Seattle and San Francisco are second and third respectively, but they are fourth and first in points allowed per game respectively as well. The playmakers on offense are not all that great, but the stars on defense are undeniable. They track down studs in their sleep and the depth is filthy good. Bobby Wagner (Seattle) and Patrick Willis (San Francisco) are freaks on defense and they are not the only ones. The defensive backs of Seattle may have given up a ton of yards to the Patriots, but they managed to pick up a huge interception in the endzone towards the end of the game. That play was significant in deciding the outcome and they will need Alex Smith to do the same. In fact, New England had the ball inside the Seattle 25 ...

49ers coach Harbaugh stands behind Smith, as usual

So what does it mean that Colin Kaepernick finished the San Francisco 49ers' game Sunday against the New York Giants? Are the 49ers grooming him to eventually replace Alex Smith? Was Smith's sprained middle finger hurting more than he let on? Or were the 49ers simply protecting Smith after he was sacked four times? More than likely it's the latter. As is his pattern...
