Save The Date: Seahawks vs. Cardinals

The Countdown Is On – Game 1 Is In 38 Days – September 9th, 2012
1:25PM PT - University of Phoenix Stadium

After a much needed day off, the Seattle Seahawks returned to the practice fields for Camp Day 5 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center today, now just nine short days away from the pre season opener against Matt Hasselbeck, Jake Locker and the Tennessee Titans.

Small Observations

Ex UW WR Jermaine Kearse practiced today for the first time, after breaking his foot in offseason workouts.  He didn’t look like he was out of football shape at all.  Great to see more competition added into the receiver mix.

Jason Jones also practiced today for the first time this training camp, after missing the first four days for an undisclosed reason.  Jones is going to be a key figure in the improved pass rush this season.

Offense

Josh Portis looked very good in the few passes I saw today.  At this point in time I think the ‘Hawks would be better off not risking practice squad for him, instead cutting/trading Tarvaris Jackson and keeping Portis on the active roster.

Kearse had an excellent first day, including an impressive catch on a ball thrown behind him (by Jackson of course).

Kearse and Phil Bates are definite practice squad candidates, and only because of a deep receiving core.  That’s a beautiful thing to say after the ‘Hawks churned Koren Robinson’s tires as late as three seasons ago.

The wide receiver competition is shaping up to be more intriguing than the quarterback competition, with locks being Sidney Rice, Golden Tate and Doug Baldwin.

Bubble players include Ben Obomanu, Ricardo Lockette, Kris Durham and Deon Butler, who is enjoying a great last few days of camp.

Fray players Braylon Edwards, Antonio Bryant, Phil Bates and Jermaine Kearse will also push hard for an (active) roster spot.

Defense

During Doug Baldwin’s question and answer session on Twitter on July 26th, he said that sophomore defensive lineman Pep Levingston was the most underrated player on the roster.  After close to a week of training camp, I have to disagree.

On a deep defensive line, Levingston has done nothing to earn a spot on the team.  He seems to lack leverage, a similar issue that plagued Red Bryant before the move to defensive end.

Despite being the only none Pro-Bowl member of the starting secondary last season, Richard Sherman may very well be the best member of that group.

He celebrated Golden Tate‘s birthday by absolutely bullying him in drills, and made a few nice plays on balls thrown Kearse and Bates’ way as well.

Golden Tate Seahawks Seattle Seahawks pre season notes: Training Camp day 5

Most fans figure Golden Tate will continue his development in 2012/13. That’s a good thing.

Speaking of the secondary, you can tell the kind of chemistry Brandon Browner, Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor and Sherman have with each other.

It really is noticeable in drills when groups sub in and out and the four of them finally get to be together.

This is the year they are going to cement themselves as the best secondary in the NFL.

Quarterback Competition

It’s not a competition anymore; Matt Flynn is head and shoulders above the rest of the group.  He has shown stuff that Tarvaris Jackson never did in his first five years in the league.

Russell Wilson had a good day today and only missed on a few passes.  Tomorrow is his day to run with the one’s so he should have another good showing.

Jackson actually looked very good in receiver drills, but fell apart when defensive players were added, throwing behind receivers on numerous occasions.  If he makes it past the cut to 75 I will be shocked.

What They’re Saying

Incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson spoke with the media after Thursday’s practice.

On what the coaching staff wanted him to improve on this offseason:

“You can get better in everything, getting rid of the football, a lot of times last year I was taking hits and sacks.  Accuracy downfield on deep balls is big as well”.

On Golden Tate’s change from last season to now: “He lost a little weight this offseason, he’s a lot quicker.  He always had the talent, but by him losing a few pounds he can get down the field faster.

A lot quicker in and out of his breaks now as well.”

There you have it folks.

Seattle Seahawks QB Battle

The Seahawks have been searching for a new quarterback. Last year, they decided to part ways with then quarterback, Matt Hasselbeck. Hasselbeck struggled to match his best year under Seattle, which was the year of their Super Bowl run. In their search for a new QB, the Seahawks turned to Tarvaris Jackson. In my opinion, this was just a temporary replacement. In a full season...

NWSB Insider report: Brett visits Seahawks Training camp 7/31/12

The VMAC Scoop Moving Seahawks training camp to Renton has bothered me since I first heard a rumor that it was going to happen. Why? Training camp is just better in Cheney There is no pay to park, there are no buses that move people to and from the facility like cattle in stinky over crowded school buses and most importantly the players are away from the distractions of everyday...

Seattle Seahawks: Braylon Edwards Better Not Blow This Opportunity

On Christmas Eve 2011, Braylon Edwards and his 49ers teammates went into Seattle and held off the Seahawks, improving their record to 12-3, and enhancing their odds at getting a first round playoff bye.   Three days after the game, in which he had one catch for nine yards in the second quarter, Edwards was cut by the 49ers.   It was a meek end to an equally meek run for one of...

Seattle Seahawks' Three-Way Quarterback Battle Is in NFL, Whether You've Heard of It Or Not

You can have your quarterback battle in Tennessee -- no matter who wins, Jake Locker is taking over within a short amount of time. You can have your quarterback scrap in Cleveland -- old rookie or not, Brandon Weeden is still far better than Colt McCoy. You can have your running back squabble in New England -- whoever is deemed the starter, coach Bill Belichick is still likely to...

Tate looking for breakthrough season with Seahawks

(Eds: With AP Photos.) Beginning his third year in the league, Golden Tate appears poised to finally have his breakthrough season with the Seattle Seahawks. Tate no longer looks lost on the practice field. He doesn't get overly excited while making a catch in practice and has a quiet confidence to go along with his athleticism. Tate became a more dependable weapon for the Seahawks...

Wagner being given shot at starting LB for Seattle

(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated.) By TIM BOOTH AP Sports Writer Outside of his daily assignment of carrying in the shoulder pads and helmets of his veteran teammates, Seattle's Bobby Wagner doesn't feel much like a rookie. He certainly isn't being treated like a rookie on the practice field or in the meeting rooms, where he is being given first shot at taking over the...

Warren Moon believes Matt Flynn will be the Seahawks’ starter

AP Photo On Friday, former Seattle Seahawks quarterback Warren Moon told NFL AM (via NFL.com) that he believes Matt Flynn will end up being the starter in Seattle this season. “All these guys have the ability to play, but I think they brought in Matt Flynn to be their quarterback,” Moon said. “I think before it’s all said and done, he’s gonna be the guy that starts day...

Seattle Seahawks 2012 Season Preview

There is no team that has turned over their roster nearly as much over the last three seasons as the Seattle Seahawks, and they have done it pretty seamlessly. After finishing 7-9 under the direction of Pete Carroll, including a division championship in 2010 and first round win over reigning Super Bowl champs the New Orleans Saints, the Seahawks finished in third place in the division...

Seahawks’ Receiving Corps Could Be A Darkhorse This Season

Northwest Sports Update A sportsbook review of the Seattle Seahawks’ camp so far may focus on the battle at quarterback, where Matt Flynn, Tarvaris Jackson and rookie Russell Wilson are reportedly all still in contention to start as they get ready for the preseason. Whichever quarterback manages to win the battle should have a potentially dangerous group of receivers to work...

Training Camp Digest (8/1): Return of the Husky

First off, some good news for you University of Washington fans: undrafted free agent wide receiver and ex-Husky Jermaine Kearse was activated off the physically unable to play list today, allowing him to participate in his first Seahawks practice.  I haven’t seen any mention of how well he did out there, but last I checked getting on to the field is a step up from standing on...
