The Seattle Seahawks are currently 7-1 and are clearly one of the best teams in the NFL. Some think they’re the odds-on favorites to win the NFC this year, but that task just got a whole lot more difficult. Seattle announced on Tuesday that wide receiver Sidney Rice will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. Rice also suffered a concussion in Monday night’s 14-9 win over the St. Louis Rams. While Rice hadn’t made a huge impact numbers-wise this season, with fellow receiver Percy Harvin not yet back from a hip injury, the Seahawks are thin at the position. Rice was third on the team with 15 catches for 231 yards and was tied for the team lead with three touchdowns. He has had knee issues before, and in August he traveled to Switzerland to undergo platelet-rich plasma treatments. Without Rice, who went down in the first half against the Rams, the Seahawks really struggled offensively. They finished with a season-low 135 total yards Monday night. Harvin could return from his injury this Sunday, but that is far from certain, and his injury history suggests that the Seahawks can’t rely on him being around and effective. That means quarterback Russell Wilson will have to rely even more heavily on Golden Tate (32 receptions, 439 yards) and Doug Baldwin (23 receptions, 372 yards) who have done yeoman’s work on the perimeter this season. Rice is in the final year of his contract and has played just 81 of 112 games since entering the NFL in 2007. Additionally, since 2009 he has appeared in just 39 of a possible 64 games. He has 243 receptions for 3,592 yards and 30 touchdowns in his career. While the knee injury is obviously troubling for Rice, so is the concussion he suffered. His 2011 season was cut short by two concussions in three weeks.
