Seattle Seahawks would be better off losing potential latest battle with the San Francisco 49ers
Darren Yamashita-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Seahawks have had to get used to losing out to the San Francisco 49ers in recent times, dropping five straight games to their arch rivals across the regular season and postseason. Now there's the chance they face an offseason battle with the Niners, and it's one they're better off losing.

Per Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, former Seahawks safety Jamal Adams remains an option to return to the team after being cut in March.

However, the Seahawks may have a surprise rival for his services in the form of the 49ers. According to Condotta, the Niners have "kept in touch" with Adams.

If the Niners really are interested in Adams, the Seahawks should let San Francisco have him.

Yes, the Seahawks could use depth at safety and linebacker, which may be his better position at this point in his career, but as an extremely limited coverage defender whose best role is as a blitzer, Adams would not improve the Seahawks.

At safety, the Seahawks have an impressive starting duo in Julian Love and Rayshawn Jenkins, a hugely underrated coverage defender. While they might want another option behind that part, the Seahawks have their likely backups in K'Von Wallace and Coby Bryant, who offers versatility in his ability to play safety and the slot.

Linebacker is more of an issue, but the Seahawks have an athletic starter coming off his best season in coverage in Jerome Baker while Tyrel Dodson displayed significant promise in 10 games for the Buffalo Bills last season and, at 25, still has his best football ahead of him.

The Seahawks also drafted Tyrece Knight in the fourth round out of UTEP. They may be reluctant to throw him in the fire as a rookie and, with Seattle alarmingly short of depth behind Baker and Dodson, it would be wise to make an addition.

But Adams, who allowed a passer rating of 111.7. when targeted last season and did not have a sack in nine games in 2023, does not bring enough to the table at this point in his career to be a worthwhile acquisition.

Adams' most impressive statistic last season was his tackles for loss tally of seven.

Yet this is a Seahawks defense hoping to making progress in 2024 under new head coach Mike MacDonald and it has enough talent at all three levels to do so. Adams would be a progress stopper. If the Seahawks do face a battle with the 49ers for the former All-Pro, they should let San Francisco win.
