The Senior Bowl game played in Mobile, Alabama showcases the best NFL draft prospects and future Fantasy talent each year. The game itself can be a little dull for those who aren’t followers at the college level, but the stats don’t lie. 84 players from the 2010 Senior Bowl were drafted in the April NFL 2010 draft and 10 of those were 1st round picks. In fact, the MVP of the game seems to
get a boost in the combine/NFL buzz department for players on the rise. Just look at the MVP names from the last decade and you can see a handful of talent that moved up on draft day:
2000Chad PenningtonMarshall
2001LaDainian TomlinsonTCU
2002Antwaan Randle ElIndiana
2003Larry JohnsonPenn State
2004Philip RiversNC State
2005Charlie FryeAkron
2006Sinorice MossMiami (FL)
2007Tony HuntPenn State
2008Matt ForteTulane
2009Pat WhiteWest Virginia
2010Brandon GrahamMichigan
*2011 QB Christian Ponder Florida State
This year’s game saw the South win in unanimous fashion 24-10. The game was very one sided, yet the talent level and game play was average at best. Players barely got into a rhythm with their new teammates, even with the defense’s stuck in standard formations (by rule) eliminating any real defensive strategy.
Unfortunately, this years game didn’t allow any insight to whom could be early stand-outs come combine or this years draft. I’m sure there are a lot of gems in this years draft class, but this game didn’t showcase it.
One player that did stand out was QB Christian Ponder of Florida State. It took most of the game before any sort of rhythm could emerge from either team, but Ponder did lead a good looking drive and made a few nice throws hitting a 23-yard pass to TCU receiver Jeremy Kerley with 3:04 left in the game. I had planned to dive deep into a fresh crop of fantasy potentials, but without more to go on I’d be seriously reaching.
The NFL Combine will be a better showcase of talent, I look forward to the meat market.
