For years, politically and morally conscious Giants fans have cringed when the Tomahawk Chop reigns down on Turner Field, where the Atlanta Braves play. The chant is horrendous and offensive, but the team’s name isn’t that much better. Neither is the name of the Cleveland Indians. Now the city of San Francisco is doing its small part to help end racial slurs in professional sports. The San Francisco Chronicle has decided to cease using the term “Redskins,” which, of course, is the name of Washington’s NFL franchise. Washington has been in the news for its name all year, as everyone from sportswriters to the President of the United States has taken the team to task for its offensive name. Team owner Dan Snyder has steadfastly refused any change, and has done so in a very ignorant manner, claiming it is not hurtful, even as Oneida Indian Reservation members met with NFL executives today to call for a change.
